Hepatitis A, a public health threat

There is a hepatitis A (hep A) outbreak in multiple counties in Kentucky. This serious viral infection of the liver is preventable through vaccination and careful handwashing with soap and water, which is more effective than using hand sanitizer. If you have not previously been vaccinated against hep A or had the infection and developed immunity to it, vaccination is recommended. Multiple resources for this service are available:

—The Park Well Care Center at Appliance Park (502-452-0777)
—Primary care practices in your community (check your health plan website’s physician finder tool if you are in need of a primary care provider)
—Clinics inside pharmacies, retail or grocery stores

While the current public health threat is focused on Kentucky, hepatitis A infection is common throughout all parts of the U.S. and around the world. The global prevention plan is the same— careful hand washing and vaccination.
